Over the course of the character's publication, Jughead's hat has evolved from a modified fedora to its more recognisable "crown" appearance. Though some view the hat as strange and immature, Jughead considers it a good luck charm and when it is taken from him, misfortune comes his way.
The longer Jughead wore the hat, the more impossible it became for him to take it off. As the whoopee cap completely faded from memory, it morphed into something more closely resembling an actual crown — no less bizarre and no less irrelevant — but it never left his head.
According to Peg Bertholet, it actually stands for a place in the town Riverdale is based on, Skunk Hill in Haverhill, MA, where Montana grew up and which he turned into Squirrel Hill.
It's called a whoopee cap, and it was actually a really popular accessory with young people when Jughead made his comic book debut back in 1941. Factory workers used to invert highly popular felt fedoras and jaggedly chop off the brim so their eye sight wouldn't be affected as they worked.
While Jughead was confirmed to be asexual in the 2015 series, and interpretations of the “classic” character like the one in Twelve Cent Archie considered his asexuality to be self-evident, other incarnations of the character have erased this aspect of his personality.
Called a 'button beanie' or 'whoopee cap,' its wearers were often called 'jagheads. '" Jaghead seemed to become Jughead when the character was being created, and thus an instantly recognizable figure was born.
Betty ceremonially burned the beanie with Archie and Veronica to fake Jughead's death, and then immediately knitted him a new one to wear upon his revival. It is going to be strange to see Jughead without his beanie from now on, but at least Riverdale fans will always have the memories.

In the original pilot script for Riverdale, Jughead is hard of hearing, and wears a hearing aid which is mostly hidden by his hat.
Last season, Riverdale revealed that Archie, Betty, and Veronica would make a pact never to discuss what happened during spring break of senior year. While covered in blood, they would burn Jughead's beanie and agree to go their separate ways after high school.

In Jughead and Friends Digest #25 story "The Secret of Jughead's Hat" his cap is destroyed in a laundry accident. Wendy Weatherbee (Principal Weatherbee's niece) replaces the lost hat by doing exactly as explained above when she takes an old fedora and cuts it and shapes it to remake the whoopee cap or crown.
"The Wedding" is Part 5 in the 6 issue story arc of Archie Marries Veronica/Archie Marries Betty that was originally presented in Archie # 604. The story features a futuristic look into the life of Archie Andrews and his wedding to Betty Cooper.

Turns out Jughead, while not emotionally fine, is not only alive and kicking, but he was never actually missing. In typical Jones fashion, the dramatic scene he left behind was only the result of him being a dramatic character.
It's no secret that a lot of shady and horrific crimes take place in Riverdale, but one of the most devastating had to be the murder of Polly Cooper.
