While many theories regarding the identity of the killer have been suggested, the only suspect authorities ever publicly named was Arthur Leigh Allen, a former elementary school teacher and convicted sex offender who died in 1992.
Allen worked at the Ace Hardware in Vallejo for over a decade until complications from diabetes forced him to quit prior to his death in 1992. The real Arthur Leigh Allen (left) and actor John Carroll Lynch (right) in the movie.

Gary Francis Poste is the Zodiac Killer, according to the Case Breakers - a group of more than 40 former police investigators, journalists and military intelligence officers. The team said it had based its case on forensic evidence, photos found in Poste's own darkroom and on some of the serial killer's coded notes.
1957: Allen enlisted in the U.S. Navy. (Zodiac was thought to have an affiliation with the military, most likely the Navy.) June 15, 1958: Allen was arrested by the Vallejo Police Department for disturbing the peace as the result of an altercation with acquaintance Ralph Spinelli.
Though the case of the Zodiac killer remains unsolved, it has been the subject of interest in Hollywood for years, with the most famous depiction being David Fincher's 2007 Zodiac. The film is often praised as being one of the most historically accurate films based on real events.
Whether it was Gary Francis Poste or not, one thing that is clear according to the authorities is that the Zodiac killer would now be around 90 years old.
It's also possible Zodiac stopped taking lives for a reason outside his control, such as institutionalization, incarceration or his own death. Or perhaps Zodiac continued to hunt victims, but in a different way.
After the decoding, it was revealed that the the cipher was sent in all capital letters with no punctuation marks. The deciphered message reads as: "I hope you are having lots of fun in trying to catch me. That wasn't me on the TV show which brings up a point about me.
Ross Mario Sullivan (July 28th, 1941 - September 29th, 1977) is a suspect in the Zodiac case.
The Zodiac sent four coded messages in total to the paper in 1969 and 1970. The first had 408 characters and was cracked in a week. The recently solved 340-character cipher was the second.
Vaughn was never considered a credible suspect. But in a movie filled with rote police work and dead ends, those five minutes of kettle-whistling tension turn a procedural into true horror.
Bob Vaughn was a real guy actually (an organist) and he was never implicated as the Zodiac at all. Graysmith was just going a bit crazy trying to solve this case. Yes, I pretty much agree on this after contemplating this question.
Researchers say they have finally unmasked Jack the Ripper, the infamous serial killer who terrorized London in the late 1800s. A forensic investigation published in Journal of Forensic Sciences has identified the killer as Aaron Kosminski, a 23-year-old Polish barber and prime suspect at the time.
Why is the Zodiac Killer called the Zodiac Killer? He called himself "Zodiac" in his fourth letter to the press on August 7, 1969. In it, he wrote: "Dear Editor This is the Zodiac speaking." From then on the press called him the 'Zodiac Killer' - but it is not known why the killer gave himself that name.
Heriberto "Eddie" Seda (born July 31, 1967), often referred to as The New York Zodiac, is an American serial killer who struck New York City from 1990 to 1993.
The Zodiac killer was last seen the night of Oct. 11, 1969. After killing cab driver Paul Stine in a San Francisco neighborhood called Presidio Heights, Zodiac was observed by witnesses as he fled north on foot. Minutes later, an alleged encounter took place between Zodiac and unsuspecting police officers.
Yet a new study claims to have used DNA analysis to reveal the man behind the brutal slayings. According to a study in the Journal of Forensic Sciences, the man known as Jack the Ripper is likely Aaron Kominski, a 23-year-old barber of Polish descent who lived in London at the time.
As for Darlene Ferrin, Allen lived in his mother's basement less than 50 yards from Darlene's place of employment, and it was confirmed that she had been seen with a strange guy named Lee.
Zodiac made a big promise about the Z 408 cipher, writing, “By the way, are the police haveing [sic] a good time with the code? If not, tell them to cheer up; when they do crack it they will have me.” This was far from true.
“I hope you are having lots of fun trying to catch me,” the Zodiac Killer wrote. RedditFayçal Ziraoui claims to have cracked the Zodiac Killer's final two ciphers. But despite the breakthrough, ciphers Z13 and Z32 remained unsolved.
There is only one known unbreakable cryptographic system, the one-time pad, which is not generally possible to use because of the difficulties involved in exchanging one-time pads without their being compromised. So any encryption algorithm can be compared to the perfect algorithm, the one-time pad.
“I hope you are having lots of fun in trying to catch me. I am not afraid of the gas chamber because it will send me to paradice [sic] all the sooner because I now have enough slaves to work for me,” the decoded message reads, without giving any insight into the killer's identity.
David Oranchak, the leader of the team that cracked the 340-character cipher, said in a written exchange that he was skeptical of Mr.
