This episode begins not with Future Ted telling his children how he met their mother, but instead with Robin's future kids. Future Robin asks them if she's ever told them the story of how she met their father, then skips forward to when she told him she was pregnant where it is revealed that Barney is their father.
All subsequent seasons had 24 episodes as well. Both Alyson Hannigan and Cobie Smulders were pregnant during the fourth season, so their characters are seen wearing loose clothing, and holding large objects to cover their stomachs. Alyson Hannigan's pregnancy was referenced throughout most of the season.
In Season 7, Robin thinks she's pregnant and that it's Barney's kid since they'd recently slept together. But then part one of Robin's big pregnancy twist is revealed and she's actually infertile and can't have children.
In the series finale, Barney and Robin get married. Then, the action jumps forward through the years. We see the couple fight and eventually divorce.

One such HIMYF theory says Barney Stinson (Neil Patrick Harris) might be Sophie's dad. But that theory has since been debunked — here's proof Barney Stinson and Sophie share no familial ties.
Barney and Robin got married in May 2013, making him 37 and her 33 years old. Ted ended up meeting Tracy, aka the "Mother," that night. She was born in September 1984, so at that point, she was still 28.
The Robin ends with Barney proposing marriage to Robin, who accepts. They get married on May 25, 2013 (The End of the Aisle). After three years together travelling the world for Robin's journalism career, Barney is tired of constantly living in hotels and not being able to maintain a job of his own.
In 2020, Barney's daughter Ellie was born and he fell in love with her at first sight. Ted tries to convince her to marry Barney but she decides to run away and runs right into The Mother. When they get up The Mother tells Robin to take three deep breaths. Then Barney shows up and vows to Robin one thing: To be honest to Robin. Robin decides to go through with the wedding and they get married.
It appears that the cast and execs felt that it was time to end Ted's story, and looking back it was the right to time say goodbye to the gang.
But knowing that Robin and Ted ultimately ended up together, HIMYM as a whole now makes perfect sense. Despite being rushed and underwhelming, the finale justified the entire series. Because, as the finale proved, Ted's story had always been about Robin.
That night, Ted meets Tracy McConnell, and they fall in love, eventually getting married. The series ends in the year 2030, with Tracy having died six years before.
Throughout the sixth season, Marshall and Lily try to get pregnant. Their first attempts are unsuccessful, however, and they worry that they will not be able to conceive. In the season finale, Lily finally gets pregnant. At the end of the seventh season, she gives birth to a son, Marvin.

During season five, the actor who played Robin and the actor who played Lily were both pregnant, but their characters were not. So the props team just kept hiding their growing bellies behind large props and handbags.
For example, Angela Kinsey was expecting a child during season four of The Office. Often, TV shows find ways to hide an actress's swollen belly during scenes. Alyson Hannigan is now working on a few projects while managing a family. During her time on How I Met Your Mother, she got pregnant twice.
Sunday 2 p.m.: Marshall enlists Ted and Barney to help him investigate where Lily went when she walked out in the middle of their fight. The gang ultimately discovers that Lily is pregnant and it is later revealed that she and Marshall will have a daughter.
