For permanent above-ground PVC pipe installations, it is recommended that the pipe be protected from sunlight exposure. This can be accomplished by wrapping the pipe with an opaque material, or more commonly, by painting it. If the pipe is to be painted, a water-based paint formulated for exterior use is recommended.
PVC is made to be resistant to sunlight and therefore is unaffected by sunlight in any way. PVC is OK to use on the exterior and as a main cold water supply. However, PEX is typically much easier to install.
UV-EXPOSED PVC PIPE RETAINS ITS FLEXIBILITY
The sole performance characteristic adversely affected by sunlight exposure is impact strength, which decreased from its original levels. However, after two years of exposure, average impact strength still exceeded the value required for new pipe.
1.2. 1 Schedule 40 rigid PVC conduit and fittings are for aboveground use indoors or outdoors exposed to sunlight and weather, and for underground use by direct burial or encasement in concrete.
Polyethylene pipes are used in a wide range of pipes for drainage, irrigation, water service and even some varieties for underground gas transport. It is durable and provides long-term resistance to environmental conditions in outdoor and underground uses.
You must install outdoor water lines according to local codes which assure the best operation of plumbing systems. Plastic pipe is in common use in plumbing systems today because of its resistance to corrosion and bursting.
PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride): Traditionally, PVC piping only lasts between 25-40 years. However, with recent technological advancements, PVC pipes may be able to last 70 years or more.
PVC does surprisingly well when exposed to ultra violet rays (sunlight). Research shows little to no effect on PVC's tensile strength or elasticity after prolonged sun exposure. The only degradation that seems to occur is impact strength.
Given the fact that PVC pipe can potentially lose impact resistance after two years, it's a good idea to protect the pipe from the sun's UV rays. This can be done by covering the piping with a tarp or shielding it with an opaque surfacing agent. An ideal way to protect PVC pipe is to paint it.
Ambient temperature — PVC conduit isn't permitted to be installed if the ambient temperature exceeds 50°C (122°F) [Sec. 352.12(D)].

All PVC is subject to UV light degradation. PVC without UV protection will eventually suffer a loss of impact resistance. Your pipe will be whole, until impact at which it will shatter or crack instead of flex. Some PVC (PVC UVR) is UV resistant.
PVC becomes increasingly brittle as the temperature drops. When exposed to freezing temperatures for prolonged periods of time, it can become brittle enough to crack quite easily.
CPVC plastic pipes are your best bet when installing water pipes for internal and external (exposed to sunlight) household applications.
PVC pipes can become brittle and fail with age.
But, PVC is an excellent option for the plumbing in your home.
Ultraviolet light does not seem to have a bearing on the rigidity, pressure, or malleability of the pipes. In addition, Furniture Grade PVC fittings and pipes are non-toxic, impact proof, and resistant to UV radiation. They will not change color under the sun.
Explanation: PVC is a thermoplastic, and therefore, at some point it will begin to degrade and break down as it's heated up. It just so happens that Schedule 40 PVC's maximum operating temperature is 140 degrees Fahrenheit, around the same temperature that hot water gets to in most homes.
While it's not necessary to paint PVC pipe when using FORMUFIT Furniture Grade PVC pipe, many of our users prefer to use readily available, off-the-shelf plumbing grade PVC pipe from their home center or hardware store.
This is where Schedule 80 PVC pipes stand out compared to their thinner walled counterpart. In fact, the wall thickness of a pipe is a key variable used to study the changes in impact strength of PVC pipes exposed to sunlight. It is safe to say then, for outdoor applications, Schedule 80 PVC pipes should be your go-to.
However, PVC has low heat stability, with changes in shape and color occurring at high temperatures. Furthermore, long exposure of PVC to ultraviolet (UV) radiation, e.g., from sunlight, and a high temperature results in undesirable changes in its physical and chemical properties [6,7].
The tapping of UV-discolored pressure pipes has been a topic of concern. However, the PVC pipe industry has found no evidence of tapping failures due to UV discoloration.
Whether caused by improper installation or manufacturing defects, one of the most common failures – PVC cracking – is a response to stress. There are two types of typical crack formation: ductile and brittle fracture. Ductile fracture is a bulk response of the polymer coupled with yielding.
If the pipe is totally encased in concrete small surface cracks would not affect. If the cracks go all the way through, like a total crack in a foundation, it could also damage the pipe. If the concrete has shifted along the crack line then the pipe is going to be damaged.
PVC pipes are in danger of freezing when surrounding temperatures approach 20 degrees Fahrenheit. Ice begins to form and gradually blocks the pipe. This blockage causes a rise in water pressure. Eventually the pipe ruptures and sends water everywhere.
Blue MDPE pipe may be used above ground in situations where it is not exposed to light and is protected against: Undue warming. Freezing. Potential contamination from the environment.
