Originally built on the orders of Joseph Stalin, the Urals were based on BMW bikes of the 30's. Ural has continued to make bikes since, now manufacturing in Irbit, Russia.
Urals aren't "reliable" the way a modern car is: oil changes every 10,000mi, no tune-up for 30,000mi, tires that rarely go flat, no timing or carbs to check, etc, etc.
The Soviets, being the industrious geniuses they were, stole the design from the BMW R71 back in the day. Now, it's true Harley-Davidson did the same thing to make the XA, but it seems the Russkies didn't copy the design too well, and so the Urals were horribly unreliable.
Today, Ural Motorcycles is led by a small team in Redmond, WA. We help coordinate worldwide distribution and work directly with our factory in Irbit, Russia to develop and refine the best adventure ready sidecar motorcycles available.
The motorcycle was "modeled after a late-1930s BMW sidecar bike called the R71, which Nazi Germany provided to the Soviet Union after the countries signed the nonaggression Molotov–Ribbentrop pact in 1939."
Ural is a heavy motorcycle produced in IMZ-Ural factory (Ирбитский мотоциклетный завод) in Russia. The history of Ural began in 1939 together with the planning of the II World War. The Ministry of Defence of the Soviet Union decided that BMW R71 is the best base model for making a copy for military use.
A Ural solo is designed to be ridden as a solo and we do not recommend adding a sidecar. You can't attach our sidecar without a significant amount of modification to a solo unit.
Motorcycles Industry in Russia
Motorcycles were very popular in Russia and Russian people love premium brands like BMW and Ducati, while over 60% of the market is dominated by Japanese brands.
2008 – On 12 December, the MZ factory in Zschopau closes, halting motorcycle production that had lasted 88 years in the same town.
The largest company of Russia's automotive industry is Avtovaz, located in the city of Tolyatti. It currently employs more than 130,000 people, and its Lada models dominate the Russian car market. Avtovaz models account for about 50% of Russia's total car production.

The Cossack trade name was chosen for the motorcycles, although unknown to the customers the bikes came from many factories from three different Soviet states, Russia (Ural & Ishevsk), the Ukraine (Dnieper) and Belarus (Minsk) The factory names were discarded in favour of the Cossack name, but the model names were kept ...
The first Urals were exported in 1953, at first mainly to developing countries. In the late 1960s, deliveries to developed countries began, and since then more and more Urals have appeared on the road on every continent. Urals are a unique combination of price, ageless styling, and sidecar functionality.
The Urals rise like a long and narrow spine across western Russia, forming a natural divide between Europe and Asia. The mountain range spans 2,500 kilometers (1,550 miles) passing through Arctic tundra to the north and through forested and semi-desert landscapes to the south.
Ural Effervescent Powder is a urinary alkaliniser, which works by raising the pH of urine. This makes the urine less acidic which provides effective relief from the pain of cystitis. EACH SACHET CONTAINS: Sodium bicarbonate 1.76 g, tartaric acid 890 mg, citric acid anhydrous 720 mg, sodium citrate anhydrous 630 mg.
For 2014, Ural is introducing electronic fuel injection for the first time and putting Brembo disc brakes on all three (or two) wheels.
Are Ural sidecars fast? Not especially. The recommended top speed is 70 mph, which makes it marginal for interstate work. However, the stability of the sidecar and rough-terrain capabilities of its two-wheel drive models provide safety and performance that holds it in good stead among rural riders.
In addition to a 4 speed transmission, every Ural comes with a mechanical reverse gear. Reverse can be engage by the foot pedal to the right of the rear brake.
It's important to appreciate that riding a motorcycle with a sidecar is a lot different than riding your standard two-wheeled motorcycle. The leaning movement is not as effective when riding with the mass of a sidecar. A motorcycle with a sidecar is safe as long as the bike is set up to ride correctly with one.
